Have you heard the exciting news? After searching for 5 years, the beloved nightclub, The Odyssey, has found a new home at 686 West Hastings Street. The new club contains the same sprite of the old club - including the showers for their famous "Shower Power" featuring sexy male go-go dancers - but appears to have grown up a little.
"Tonight, the best thing I've heard is people say that the Odyssey looks like it has grown up," owner Bijan Ahmadian said in a speech to the assembled crowd during a special preview reception. "It's like Odyssey 2.0 and…I'm really happy to hear that."
Ahmadian thanked everyone for their support and he talked about how they strived to incorporate all the feedback they received from the community.
"I got a call two years ago from our generous financier who asked me if I wanted to help get this process started," he said. "We went through lots of designs and I hope that we've created a space that's indicative of what the community wanted. I've always said that the Odyssey is a community hub first and a bar second, and I hope we've accomplished that."
The location is a departure from the gay scene that has traditionally been centralized around the Davie Village area, but Bijan Ahmadian told Vancity Buzz welcoming inclusive spaces outside of the West End strip are needed.
“Davie Street will always be a focal point for Vancouver’s gay scene,” said Ahmadian. “But the reality is that we have fewer LGBTQ+ spaces in 2014 than we did in the 1980s… We believe this is the right time to begin to establish welcoming inclusive spaces outside of the Davie Village, something that we can call our own. ”
Ahmadian says accessibility was key for considering the new location of the nightclub as customers will come from all across the Lower Mainland – not only the West End. Within the immediate area, there are two SkyTrain lines, SeaBus, a night bus route and a major taxi artery.
