JJ Bean has coffee shops and cafés in Vancouver and roasts coffee for many of the finest cafes and restaurants in British Columbia and across Canada.
The Neate family started roasting coffee in Vancouver in 1945. Fifty years and two generations later, John Neate Jr. (JJ) started JJ Bean Coffee Roasters in 1996.
Since then, JJ Bean has grown from a family operated shop in Granville Island Market to a team of 200+ employees. We have cafés across Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Port Moody; and a wholesale department that provides freshly roasted coffee to some of the finest cafés and restaurants across Canada.
Our roastery on Powell Street and our commissary bakery in Railtown are at the heart of what we do—enriching the lives of our customers and staff through the enjoyment of amazing coffee, in spaces where people meet and communities are served. We do this because we believe in the entire journey of coffee, from crop to cup.
It is easy to think of coffee as simply a tasty beverage made from ground “beans”. But those beans—which are actually the pits of coffee cherries—are the result of hard working coffee farmers from around the world; plus the tasters, roasters, and baristas who transform the green beans into the drink we know as coffee. We always aim to honour the entire journey of coffee and the many people who work tirelessly to bring us that tasty beverage.
In the end, our approach is simple: find the highest quality green coffee and roast it in small batches daily. From the farms we deal with directly to our East Vancouver roastery, the same motto guides us: the best taste wins.
The Marine Building is one of the oldest and most beautiful towers in downtown Vancouver, and we are proud to call it our home. This café features a mezzanine floor for extra privacy and comfort, and a design that combines the building’s art deco aesthetic with a modern West Coast café look.
